Fairgoers flock to Birds of the World perfomances

Birds of the World will make its 18th consecutive appearance at the State Fair of Texas, Sept. 29 – Oct. 22. Best-known for the aerodynamic feats of its superstars from perches atop the 212 ft. Texas Star Ferris Wheel, this year's free-flight bird show includes all the old favorites. The Yellow-naped Amazon Parrot, Groucho, entertains the audience with "Yankee Doodle" and other tunes from his repertoire. Headliners include macaws, cranes, condors, owls and hawks. Maribou Storks – Bonnie and Clyde – join their feathered friends for a return visit to the Fair. At only 18 months of age, the show-stoppers have a 10 ft. wing span and are among the largest species of flying birds in the world.

Birds of the World

Trainer and emcee Steve Martin is a pioneer in the art of training a variety of birds and animals through positive reinforcement. A master falconer for more than 35 years and a parrot trainer for more than 45, he's produced shows and consulted on bird and animal behavior at zoos and parks across the world. Martin is known for his educational program philosophy and the free-flight bird show is both informative and entertaining.

Visitors to the aviary will enjoy "Spectacular Macaws" – featuring various species of macaws from Central and South America. The walk-through exhibit includes a room filled with birds from around the world – thrusting visitors into a whirlwind of parakeets, canaries, finches and more.

Sponsored by Kroger and located in the historic Band Shell, Birds of the World is free. Daily shows are 1, 2:30, 4:30 and 6 p.m. A $1 fee is charged for the walk through the Aviary, a portion of which goes to Natural Encounters Conservation Fund helping birds in the wild. Last year fairgoers donated $45,000 through NCEF to help birds in the wild.
